Starting January 2021, Moticon has introduced an update for its wireless SCIENCE Sensor Insoles. A new internal memory chip of double size was included, which allows researchers to implement extended stand alone data recording times in studies related to long term gait profiles or in-field measurements in sports.

Since 2012, Moticon has been pioneering the market for clinical research related to long term patient gait profiles and a variety of high ranking publications were published by numerous research institutes. Moticon now raises the bar with its product of choice for all researchers working on long term gait and motion profiles. The increasing demand in the market and some large scope clinical studies ahead, Moticon takes advantage of advancements in the microelectronics industry and introduces a new low power flash memory for its completely integrated sensor insols.

Memory size was increased from 16 MB to 32 MB with this update, allowing nearly doubled on-board recording times. A detailed overview of recording times with different sampling frequency and sensor channel setups can be found in the product specifications.

Along with Moticon’s unique “Smart Recording” operation mode, the memory update opens the field for collecting more comprehensive and extended gait profiles in daily life over a period of several days up to several weeks. The total recording time depends on the recording settings, i.e. sampling frequency and sensor channel setup. Both settings can be set by the user using the easy to access context menu in the SCIENCE Mobile App.

The Smart Recording mode was introduced for the new insole3 sensor insole generation in 2019. It triggers data recording automatically when the patient is active and starts walking or applying load in general. Smart Recording puts the sensor insoles in a sleep mode for inactive periods, e.g. when patients are sitting, hence significantly extending the overall recording time for monitoring of activity of daily life. This intelligent recording mode offers three (3) different sensitivity levels, triggering data recording in case of low load or low intensity movements (Sensitive) down to walking only (Insensitive).

Data sets recorded with the Smart Recording mode carry absolute and relative time information such that patients’ activity and gait profiles can be related to daily routines. The data includes gaps for the periods when the recording was put on hold due to inactivity. The image highlights a data gap due to inactivity in a long term data set, shown in the Moticon SCIENCE Desktop Software.
